Installing the VPN Client - Windows 7

This document explains how to install the VPN client in Windows 7 using Internet Explorer.

For UW Colleges or UW Extension owned Windows based laptops connected to the internal network (, the VPN client is available to download through the Software Center.  Please refer to the following KB article for instructions on how to open the Software Center and install programs:

For personal devices, or if you are not connected to the internal network please follow the steps below to install the VPN client through the public internet.

Before you can install the VPN client, you have to add the VPN URL to Internet Explorer's trusted sites. See KB "Add VPN to Internet Explorer Trusted Sites" for this process.

Open Internet Explorer and go to

Enter your username (first.last) and password in the appropriate boxes, then click Login.



You should see the "Authorized use only" message shown below. Click Continue



Wait for the AnyConnect client to complete the installation process.  Confirm/accept all prompts.


 Once this is completed AnyConnect will automatically make the connection.


The VPN icon on the system tray indicates that the VPN is connected.    


To connect to the VPN:

Click on the VPN icon in the system tray.      


Select Connect.

The first time you will receive a error message like the one below:

Click on Change Setting.  Then uncheck the box next to "Block connections to untrusted servers"


Click the 'X' in the upper right and re-connect the VPN client.  You will see the Security Warning screen shown below.

Click Connect Anyway.

Select the UWEX-UWC group, then enter your username (first.last) and password and click OK.


 Once your username and password have been authenticated, you should see the screen below. Click Accept.


When the VPN connection has been established, you should see a screen like this one:      


Once the remote session is finished, be sure to disconnect from the VPN. Simply open the Cisco AnyConnect client and select Disconnect.


When disconnected, the VPN client should appear as shown below.
