Clientless VPN through a web browser - network drive(s)

These instructions will allow you to use a remote access tool (VPN) outside of the UW-Extension and UW-Colleges network to gain access to network drives.

To work with your network drives remotely, you will need to know the network path ahead of time.  Before leaving the office please make sure to perform the steps in the following KB article to record your network drive information ---> VPN - Determining Network Drive Paths

 Open any internet browser to connect to your network drives through VPN. The example below shows Internet Explorer. In your browser type the following in the address bar as noted below and press enter:

You will see this screen, enter your login information, and click Login:

 Click Continue:

If your home drive is not available, then the words Home Drive will be greyed out as shown below.




To access files on your Home Drive, select the Home Drive link.

After selecting the Home Drive icon, a listing of the files from your Home Drive should appear like the list shown below.

Note: If your home drive doesn’t display files, try this method:

                                Click in in the upper window, as seen below.


 Now type    citpfile07/users$/first.lastname     (Replace first.lastname with your name. similar to your login credentials.) click enter when done.


To open additional network drives perform the following steps.  

*Note that you must have recorded the network paths of the drives you wish to access ahead of time using the instructions in the following KB article -->  VPN - Determining Network Drive Paths

In any browser make sure you have already completed the steps to connect to your VPN.

In the open text box following the cifs:// drop down enter the path to the network drive you would like to open and press Enter. 

**Note:  For connecting mapped drives via the clientless VPN do not enter the "//" at the start of the network drive path.

In the example below we entered  "citpfile07/groups". The network drive will open as seen below.

 To edit a file, it is necessary to download it, make changes, and then upload the file back to your network folder.


 To download the file, select the file from the list by clicking on it.  The file ‘Open or Save’ window should appear as shown below.


Select the ‘Save’ option (shown above) to save the file to your local hard drive. 

Once the file has completed downloading you should see the ‘download has completed’ message as shown below. 



Select the ‘Open folder’ option shown above.


When Windows Explorer opens the Downloads folder, we see the file that we downloaded (shown on the right below).  For this example we are using the file named  Remove Citrix Web plugin.docx  as shown below.



To make changes to the file, double click on the file to open it with the appropriate program, in this example the document would open in Microsoft Word.


After saving your changes, you will want to put the file back on to your Home Drive.  To accomplish the transfer back on to your Home Drive, select the folder icon with the green right facing arrow as shown in the red box below.  After selecting the icon, you should see the Upload File window appear as shown below.


 Select the folder (Downloads) where the changed file is stored.  Select the file (Remove Citrix Web plugin.docx for this example) and click on Open.


 Select the Ok button to upload the changed file back to your Home Drive. 

You should see the  Message from webpage  window shown below, warning about overwriting the file on your Home Drive.  Select the Ok button to confirm that you want to overwrite the existing file on your Home Drive as shown below
