Skype Connectivity with Skype For Business (Lync)

Microsoft has recently announced the ability to connect Skype with Skype for Business (Lync) users. This document will show users how to add contacts and use Skype with Skype for Business.

Communicate with Skype Users with Microsoft Skype for Business
This document shows users how to use instant messaging, audio calls, and presence information to communicate with Skype users while using Microsoft Skype for Business (and vice-versa). As of November 2014, Microsoft announced that the “Lync” application would be named “Skype for Business” instead. The name change will be formally applied in early 2015.

Microsoft Skype for Business supports connectivity with Skype. This connectivity allows Skype for Business users add Skype contacts by using the Skype user’s Microsoft Account (MSA).Skype users can also add Skype for Business users to their contacts list. Skype for Business and Skype users will be able to communicate using instant messaging, see each other’s presence, and initiate audio calls.

Microsoft Accounts (MSA)
If you use an email address and password to access services such as Microsoft OneDrive, Windows Phone, Microsoft Xbox LIVE online game service, Microsoft Outlook client, Microsoft's Hotmail or Windows Live Messenger, you already have a Microsoft Account. If you also have a Skype account, its easy set up single sign-on to access a variety of additional applications and services, including Skype for Business-to-Skype voice calls, etc.

Using Skype with Skype for Business
If users sign in to Skype with a Microsoft account, they may use Skype to communicate with their non-Skype contacts who are using Skype for Business (and vice-versa). For instructions on how to link your Skype and MSA accounts, go to the Skype Support Page.

Note: Be sure to link your Skype account to an MSA. A Skype account that is not linked to an MSA will not be able to communicate with Skype for Business users.

To Add A Skype Contact on Skype for Business (Lync):
1. From Skype for Business (Lync), click Add a Contact -> Add a Contact Not in My Organization.

2. From the list of available contact providers, select Skype.

3. In the IM Address field, enter the Microsoft account of the Skype user you wish to add.

Note: Be sure to use their Microsoft account address, not their Skype ID.
  • If their MSA has a domain of: or or, enter their MSA as-is. 
    • Example
  • If their MSA is NOT in one of the 3 domains listed above, use format user( 
    • For example, if the MSA of your Skype user is, enter janedoe( 
4. Ask your Skype contact to accept your contact request or to add you to their contact list. Until he or she also adds you as a contact, you will not be able to communicate and their presence will show as Offline.

Note: At present, Skype for Business users can only connect with Skype for Windows (desktop), Skype modern client (included in Windows 8 / 8.1) and Skype for Mac OS X, but Skype should begin supporting additional platforms soon.

To Add A Skype for Business (Lync) Contact on Skype:
1. Sign in to Skype
Note: You must sign in using Skype's Microsoft account sign-in page with your MSA account.

2. Select the Contacts tab at the top of your Skype window. From there, select Add Contact from the drop down menu. Choose Search Skype Directory in the pop up menu.

3. Enter the Skype for Business sign-in address of the Skype for Business user you wish to add (usually their UW email address). For example: 

4. When Skype finds the match in the search results, look for "Skype for Business" (or “Lync”) below the Skype for Business user’s name. If "Skype for Business" (“Lync”) is present, this indicates that Skype has located the Skype for Business user's address. Click their name. 

5. In the top right corner of the window, click Add to Contacts. 

6. The new contact is now added to your contact list; however, you will see a question mark instead of their status icon until they accept your request. When your new contact accepts your request, you will be able to see when they are online, when they initiate IM conversations, and when they make audio calls.
