Blackboard Collaborate - Launcher for Macs
This document describes how to install and utilize the Blackboard Collaborate launcher for Macs, used to connect to Blackboard Collaborate sessions on Mac systems.
Mac users running Mac OS X 10.8.4 or later must now install and use the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher to access Blackboard Collaborate sessions.
This change is necessary due to several recent Java updates by Oracle and recent changes to the way Apple handles Java on the Mac. The Blackboard Collaborate Launcher will help users on Mac systems when connecting to Blackboard Collaborate sessions.
Installing the Blackboard Collaborate LauncherThe first time that a .collab file is to be sent to a user, the system will present a dialog that instructs them to download the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher so that they can join a Blackboard Collaborate web conferencing session. Users on Mac OS X 10.8.4 and later systems can also manually download the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher from the First Time Users section of the software's Support Portal.
The launcher can be downloaded directly from this link.
The launcher needs to be downloaded and then unzipped. It will usually reside in the Downloads folder after being downloaded automatically, though a user should ideally move it to a different location on their file system to prevent the launcher from being accidentally deleted. Moving the launcher to a different location may require admin privileges.
Using the Blackboard Collaborate Launcher
Once the Launcher is installed, a user has to double-click on the .collab file that is downloaded to their system when they attempt to join a web conferencing session. The Blackboard Collaborate Launcher will then unpack the .collab files and launch the session.
