Computer Workstation Standards

This document defines the approved standard computer workstation configurations for UW Colleges and UW-Extension for the UWCX network. All UW Colleges campuses and UW-Extension Divisions must adhere to these standards when purchasing computer workstations.

Standards Exceptions:  No standard can anticipate all possible needs and so it is expected that some specific workstation needs may not fall within the standard.  Exceptions are allowed based on business need, but they must be reviewed with CITS prior to purchase.  Lead time can increase significantly when purchasing non-standard configurations.

Note:  This standard is updated frequently as new workstation configurations become available and as vendor performance fluctuates.

What should I buy, a Windows or a Mac?

Purchasing a computer workstation is in many ways a personal preference.  Windows based workstations are the most popular and integrate the best with most networks and software.  Interest in Mac devices is increasing as Apple has worked to make their devices integrate better with Windows based networks and as software support on Mac devices has improved.

UW Colleges and UW-Extension uses a Windows based network, however both Windows and Mac devices are supported.  Mac users should be aware of some important limitations.

  1. Currently, Mac based workstations cannot be joined to the UW Colleges or UW-Extension domain.  While a Mac device can connect to and use network resources it will function as an unmanaged device.  This means that:
    • Network shared folders, including home drives, will need to be manually configured.
    • Network printers will need to be manually connected vs being able to browse for them in the printer directory.
    • Login credentials will not synchronize on your computer.  This means that it will not accept your UWCX username and password as a login, a separate account needs to be created to sign into the computer itself.  Once logged in to the computer  your UWCX id and password can be used as normal when connecting to e-mail and network resources.
    • System management software used by Central IT will not function which limits the ability to make software available for download and install without requiring IT assistance and also limits the ability to remote connect to your device for troubleshooting purposes.  This limitation could extend problem resolution time.
  2. Certain software packages will only run on Windows and may not be able to be used on Mac devices.

Purchases by CITS

CITS frequently purchases computer workstations for Campus and Division staff.  In order to expedite the purchase process, please provide the following information with your request:
  • The name of the manager approving the purchase.
  • The funding string the purchase is to be charged back to.
If pricing is different from what is listed above, CITS will request approval before completing the purchase.

If different hardware specifications are requested the order will be subject to a delay of up to 15 business days to vet the requested configuration and facilitate the obtaining of quotes from approved vendors.
