Video Captioning with Kaltura
Central Information Technology Services is running a project to caption University of Wisconsin Colleges instructional videos hosted in Kaltura upon instructor request.
To request that a video be captioned, UWC instructors should fill out the UWC Video Captioning Request form.
To qualify for captioning, videos should be:
- from a UW Colleges instructor
- used in a UW Colleges course
- recorded (the project doesn't cover live captioning of live events)
- hosted in Kaltura
The project will pay for captioning through one of the UW System's approved captioning vendors. Turnaround time is normally 5-6 business days. Once requested, captions will automatically be inserted into the requested Kaltura videos. No further effort is required on the part of instructors or students to make the captions work.
The project will run until June 2018. The goal of the project is to improve the student experience of current UW Colleges courses and to produce a body of captioned videos which can be transitioned to the 4 year campuses. Use of this captioning project is not limited to cases where a student has an accommodation request. We believe that captioning videos makes them more valuable to all students (to learn more about this, read about Universal Design for Learning).
This captioning project is intended to supplement similar video captioning efforts by the UW Colleges Student Accessibility Services and the UW Colleges Online Instructional Design team.
