    Safe Work Practices: Animal Safety

    Keepers and aquarists should be trained in safe and proper animal husbandry, handling, crating, transferring, and transporting techniques (See AZA accreditation standards 1.5.11, 1.5.12, 1.6.1, 1.6.2, 7.3, 7.5, 7.10, 10.2.1, 11.1.2, 11.2.5, etc.).

    Inspections of enclosures (yards, pools, and off-exhibit holding units) should be conducted to identify any unsafe conditions prior to each shift. Keepers and aquarists should be skilled in working with animals, and in proper animal introduction techniques. Animals must be provided with proper food, water, shelter, and social groups. Keepers and aquarists must be aware of any zoonotic disease potential (AZA accreditation standard 11.1.2), in order to provide best possible protection for the living animal population.

    • Feeding animals is prohibited throughout the Zoo except in Zoo approved areas! This is to ensure the health and safety of the animals. If you see a guest feeding an animal, please contact a Zoo staff member.
    • For your safety, do not approach or feed the animals that wander freely around the Zoo.
    • If you ever see a person in immediate danger, contact Zoo staff immediately. DO NOT TAKE RISKS IN ANIMAL EXHIBITS. Never attempt a rescue when dangerous animals are involved. Keep your eye on the person and call for assistance. Please do not call 911 as the Zoo staff is trained to provide critical information to emergency personnel. Call the Zoo Receptionist 502-459-2181 ext. 0.
    • No Littering. All trash and/or unwanted material should be deposited in the appropriate receptacles provided around the Zoo premises.

    Volunteers have been making a difference at the Louisville Zoo for over 45 years! Share your time, talent and enthusiasm in a stimulating environment and you won’t go away empty handed. Volunteer benefits include learning about the animal world, its ecology and conservation, making new friends, developing new skills and contributing to the quality of life in your community.

    During the 2015–16 (July – June) fiscal year, the Louisville Zoo had a total of 2,845 volunteers in a variety of departments including horticulture, maintenance, administrative and even in animal areas. Together they contributed over 64.694 hours valued at $1,248,822.01 (inclusive of benefits) equal to 31 full-time employees.
