How to Download and Install Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor

Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure browser for taking quizzes in Canvas. This tool prevents access to unauthorized resources, external websites, and other applications during exams. Respondus Monitor is the webcam-based virtual proctoring software that is added to the LockDown Browser when virtual proctoring is implemented.

If your course requires use of Respondus for one or more assessments, you will need to download the Respondus LockDown Browser application to your device.

Installing the Respondus LockDown Browser client application on Windows

  1. Use this link to download the the correct version of Respondus for the Universities of Wisconsin: UW Respondus download
  2. Once you click the link, you should see this screen. Click the "DOWNLOAD" button.

  3. Once you click "DOWNLOAD," the installer package will go to your computer's Downloads folder. Locate the installer package in your Downloads folder and run it.
  4. As the installer runs, accept all the default prompts to install LockDown Browser.
  5. Done installing? - Go to your computer desktop and click on the LockDown Browser icon to launch LockDown Browser.

Installing the Respondus LockDown Browser App on Mac OS

  1. Use this link to download the correct version of Respondus for the Universities of Wisconsin: UW Respondus Download
  2. This should take you to this screen (see image). Click "INSTALL NOW."

  3. Download the LockDown Browser installer package. 
  4. If the downloaded file did not automatically unzip, locate it (usually in the Downloads folder) and double-click on the file to start the Archiver to unzip the file.
  5. Locate the installer package (ending in .pkg) to start the actual LockDown Browser installer. 
  6. Accept all the default prompts to install LockDown Browser.
  7. Done installing? - Go to Finder, click Applications, and double-click on the LockDown Browser icon (a world globe with a padlock) to start LockDown Browser.

Installing the Respondus LockDown Browser Extension on a Chromebook

  1. Log in to the Chromebook and launch Google Chrome.
  2. Log in to Canvas and navigate to the exam that requires LockDown Browser.
  3. Select the "Download Respondus LockDown Browser" link to initiate software download and installation. (This link: UW Respondus Download

  4. From the Chrome web store, select "Add to Chrome" to install the LockDown Browser extension.

  5. An "Add LockDown Browser?" pop-up window will display. Select "Add Extension."

  6. The LockDown Browserfor Chromebook extension has been installed.
