How to take a Canvas assessment with Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor

See below for instructions on the process for taking a quiz, test, or exam in Canvas using Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor.

If you are using a Windows PC or a Mac, you will need to do the following to take a quiz using Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor.

Note: During your exam, you will not be able to have other windows or apps open on your computer unless these have been specifically enabled by your instructor.

  1. Open the LockDown Browser app from your computer desktop. Windows users may see a blue diamond padlock icon. Mac users may see a globe icon with a padlock.
  2. When you open the app, it should take you to a gray "Universities of Wisconsin" screen that asks you to select your institution from a list of options. IL students should select "UW-Extension." HIMT students or semester-based AAS students should select their home campus (ex: UW-Green Bay, UW-Stout). Flexible Option students should select "UW-Milwaukee."
  3. At the next screen, you will be prompted to log in. Here, you will use the same credentials you normally use to access Canvas for the course using Respondus.
  4. Once you log in, you should see your normal Canvas dashboard. Navigate to the course and then the assessment you want to take with Respondus.
  5. When you click "Start Quiz," you will trigger Respondus Monitor (the video proctor software) to turn on. You will be guided through a setup process. This usually includes testing your video and audio, scanning your environment, and showing a photo ID with your name.
  6. Once you complete the setup steps, you will be guided back to your quiz. Complete the quiz and submit it in Canvas when you are done.
  7. If your exam requires you to submit photos of your work pages from during the exam, please follow the instructions in your course page and in Respondus.
  8. Once you have finished submitting your quiz and your work photos, if applicable, close out of the LockDown Browser by clicking the X in the top right of the webpage.

If you are using a Chromebook, you will simply navigate to the quiz within Canvas like normal, and LockDown Browser and Monitor will turn on when you begin the quiz.
