Uploading Assignment Tips

This document walks through some steps to take when experiencing difficulty with submitting assignments to an online course.

Please work through the following troubleshooting tips/best practices when experiencing difficulty with uploading/submitting assignments:

  1. Check Your file Details
    1. File type: Make sure your file uses an acceptable file extension such as:
      • .doc, .docx, .pdf, .pptx (Your instructor may allow additional formats - check with them if you're unsure.)
    2. File naming tips: To avoid upload errors, name your files clearly and simply:
      • Use short, descriptive names
      • Avoid spaces and special characters (!. ?, %, #, etc.)
      • If needed, separate words with dashes (-) or underscores (_)
      • Examples
        • GOOD examples: assignment1.doc, groupreport_2.pdf
        • BAD examples: assignment 1.doc, groupreport%.pdf

  2. Check Your Internet Connection
    1. A weak or unstable internet connection can interrupt file uploads.
      • If using Wi-Fi, ensure you have a strong signal
      • If you're unsure, run a quick test by searching "internet speed test" in Google and selecting "Run Speed Test"
      • If speeds seem slow, try using a wired Ethernet connection, which is more stable for uploads.

  3. Try a Different Browser or Device
    1. Browser tips:
      • For best results, use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox
      • Avoid Safari and Microsoft Edge if you encounter issues
      • Canvas no longer supports Internet Explorer
    2. Device tips:
      • If possible, try submitting from a different laptop or desktop
      • Some mobile devices may not upload files reliably

  4. Check Your File Size
    1. Large files - especially Word documents or presentations containing images - can take longer to upload. If your file is several MBs or larger, a strong connection becomes even more important.
